英国泰晤士高等教育特刊（Times Higher Education）公布最新全球大学名气榜，哈佛大学与麻省理工学院高踞前两名，亚洲大学的声誉排名呈上升趋势，教研水平受到国际广泛认同，排名显著提升：清华大学由去年的35名上升至30名，北京大学由去年的43名上升至38名，香港大学则由去年的第42升至第39，新加坡大学由去年的27位上升至23位。

据报道，该排行榜征求了全球1.7万名学者的意见与看法，排在前10名的大学分别为：哈佛大学、麻省理工学院、剑桥大学、斯坦福大学、加州大学伯克利分校、牛津大学、普林斯顿大学、东京大学、加州大学洛杉矶分校和耶鲁大学。

在这次连续第2年的大学声誉调查中，美国大学在前百名声誉最佳的大学中占有多达44个席位（较去年少了一所），英国占10席（较去年少了2所），日本和荷兰分占5席。

下面是新鲜出炉的2012 US News & World Report美国大学排名榜（带星号的为公立大学），在这次排名中哈佛大学普林斯顿大学并列第一，耶鲁大学排名第三，4-10位依次为：哥伦比亚大学、加州理工学院、麻省理工学院、斯坦福大学、芝加哥大学、宾夕法尼亚大学、杜克大学，排名只排前200所学校，到194位以后就没有具体排名次序了。

　　英国《泰晤士报高等教育副刊》10日发布2011年世界大学学术声誉排行榜，美国哈佛大学位列榜首，中国清华大学和北京大学跻身百强，分列第三十五和第四十三位。

　　美国大学在排行榜上独占鳌头，夺得前10名中的7席，并有45所大学进入百强。英国是第二大赢家，剑桥大学和牛津大学名列十强，总共12所英国大学进入百强。日本大学的表现也很抢眼，5所大学跻身百强，其中东京大学名列第八。排名前十位的依次为：1.哈佛大学（美国）、2.麻省工学院（美国）、3.剑桥大学（英国）、4.加州大学伯克利分校（美国）、5.斯坦福大学（美国）、6.牛津大学（英国）、7.普林斯顿大学（美国）、8.东京大学（日本）、9.耶鲁大学（美国）、10.加州理工学院（美国）。

Introduction

Factor analysis is a mathematical tool which can be used to examine a wide range of data sets. It has been used in disciplines as diverse as chemistry, sociology, economics, psychology and the analysis of the performance of race horses. This tutorial is designed to provide a basic understanding of the principles underlying factor analysis. The focus of the tutorial is the analysis of a ‘factor space’ or ‘data space’. It was written to introduce the undergraduate chemistry major to the basic concept of a ‘data space’ and to demonstrate how factor analysis can be used to study a ‘data space’. As an aid to conceptualization a geometric approach is used wherever possible and the actual linear algebra involved is illustrated.
